Movies that inspired me to be a wanderer

You may never imagine how many travel movies I have watched so far. Every time I need some motivation to step out of my comfort zone and explore the world around me, I always look for travel movies or books. They are somehow like my painkillers. I know it sounds silly but it’s true. They have been a source of inspiration for me in one way or another. You know the feeling when you watch a great travel movie and all you want to do after that is to leave everything behind and head to unknown lands, don’t you? If you are, like me, in need of an inspiring movie to push you into adventures, then this post is definitely for you. Here in this post, I’ve listed out 6 travel movies that inspired my wanderlust.

Into The Wild (2007)

“Into The Wild” is by far my most favorite travel movie. It follows the true story of a young, talented man named Christopher Mccandless who decided to leave the ordinary life with a bright future ahead and seek out freedom. Shortly after graduating from college, Chris set out on a road trip through America before ending up in the wilderness of Alaska, living his dream life. Some may say he was reckless, some other may suppose he was ignorant, but what is wrong with chasing our dream and living the way we want to live? Chris just followed his heart, looking for real happiness in life. Honestly, Chris’s story has inspired me a lot for my own journey. He made me realize that travel is not about what we carry with us but about what we carry inside. If you prefer reading to watching, then the book is also a great alternative.

Wild (2014)

Another true story about a person who wants to venture into the wilderness to discover themselves. Wild is based on the novel of the same name, following Cheryl Strayed as she hikes the Pacific Crest Trail – an 1100 mile solo hike on the West Coast of America in order to recover from her personal tragedy and to rediscover herself. This heart-touching story has taught me quite a lot of lessons in life, and on top of that, it has indeed motivated me to do things that I’m always scared of doing.

Honestly, I loved the book more than the movie (books are always better) but I have to say that the movie didn’t fail to convey the emotional impact of the book. Whether you read it or watch it, Wild is always a sincere and emotional story that will surely inspire a journey into the wild like no other.

Queen (2013, Bollywood)

Inspiring travel moviesOkay, this is one of the very few Bollywood movies that I Iove to watch. Starring Kangana Ranwat, the movie is about a typical “Asian” girl whose dreams are to get married with the love of her life. But things never happen like the way we plan. Rani’s marriage was cancelled just a day before the wedding. In order to overcome the grief, Rani decided to go on her honeymoon alone to Europe. And this very trip has changed her life forever. As an Asian girl, I can relate to her in many different aspects. The story of Rani has inspired me to break free from the typical traditional Asian mindset and live my dream.

The Before Trilogy (1995 – 2004 – 2013)

You may have heard of The beautiful Before Trilogy with seemingly endless conversations – Before Sunrise, Before Sunset and Before Midnight. They are all truly worth watching but remember to watch Before Sunrise first because it’s the beginning of the whole story and I love it the most. The movie tells the story of an American young man and a French girl who meet on a train in Europe. After a great conversation on the train, they decide to get off and spend one night together in Vienna. They talk, share stories, tell jokes and laugh. And things happen – Affection, love, distance, separations.

The Bucket List (2007)

The Bucket List is an inspiring story of two ill old men who decide to go on a trip to fulfill all of their dreams before they kick the bucket.

The story is quite simple, but deep at the same time. The core message that you can take from the movie is that “Life is short. Live each day to the fullest”. There are many dreams we want to achieve but are not courageous enough to chase. There are many things that we want to cross off in our bucket list but we procrastinate just because we don’t have time (and money). But we never know what the future holds, so just live each day as if it was our last. If you need something to kick you and give you an urge to pursue your passion, then watch the Bucket List!

I watched the movie a long while ago and still remember every piece of it. It’s a simple story about a normal guy named Walter Mitty who hates his nine-to-five job and dreams of an adventurous life.

If you are a corporate slave working in a dull office and always daydream about adventures, then I’m sure you will relate to Mitty at some level. The movie is definitely an inspiration for those who are dying (and also dare) to break out of the monotonous life and fulfill their dreams. Other than that, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty also shows some of the most stunning landscapes in the beautiful countries of Iceland, Greenland, and Afghanistan. After watching it, these places might become your must-see destinations. Who knows?
